This series was created as a new perspective on glaze test tiles. In my everyday practice, I use the potter’s wheel – a fast and convenient tool for creating vertical, repeatable forms. The thrown tests retain the characteristic marks of the technique and the texture of the clay, both of which influence the final glaze effect. Since most of my work is wheel-thrown, I want the test tiles to be miniature versions of the final pieces. The Cosmos series is the opposite of this proportion – the sample is enlarged and becomes a standalone artwork. In cross-section, it retains an “L” shape, crucial for analyzing the effects of gravity on glaze during firing. I combine the finished elements in pairs by their bases, creating broad surfaces that highlight the glaze combinations I’ve selected. The glaze is no longer a complement to the form – it becomes the most important element of the piece.
